First introduced in 1986 alongside its silver cousin, the American Silver Eagle, the Gold Eagle contains 1/10 of a Troy oz. of Pure Gold but weighs 0.109 Troy oz. in total. This is due to hardening metal alloys are used in the minting of the coin to protect it from wear and tear. This additional metal content reduces the overall purity of the total weight of the coin to 22kt, or 91.67% pure. Within the Precious Metal industry, this level of hardness is often referred to as ?Crown Gold.? The remaining metal content is approximately 5.33% copper and 3% silver.
The obverse side of the coin features the famed 1907 design of Lady Liberty from artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which was used on the popular Gold Double Eagle Coin until 1933, at which point all gold coin minting within the United States was halted until being congressionally restarted in 1986.
