1920 PHILIPPINES WILSON DOLLAR BRONZE~ HK-450 ~ SEA SALVAGE from MANILA BAY ~ SEE VIDEO
1920 Bronze medal commemorating the opening of the Manila Mint. Bust of President Woodrow Wilson obverse.
In April 1942, General Jonathan Wainwright ordered that the gold and silver coins and bullion in the Philippine Treasury be dumped into Manila Bay to prevent it falling into the hands of the Japanese. Starting on April 26, sailors of the US Navy began dumping the first of 2,630 boxes of silver pesos dated from 1903-1936 and many of the 1920 Philippine Manila Mint Opening medals. The Japanese later succeeded in recovering some of this treasure, but most was not recovered until after the war.
