Hollardops Trilobite fossil on matrix from Morocco.  The Trilobite measures 2.7" x 1.6" (69mm x 41mm) and is embedded atop matrix rock.  Authentic trilobites such as this are found by breaking apart large masses of hard Devonian rock to find the Trilobites in crevices inside.  Once located, the matrix rock is cleaned back to expose the fossilized Trilobite skeleton.  This process often calls for repair to the matrix rock and fossil.  There is a line of repair on the matrix and fossil of this piece that was professionally done, only noticeable upon the closest inspection.  This Trilobite shows great detail and dates from the Devonian Age, about 380 million years old.  Trilobites are extinct arthropods.  They had a heavy exoskeleton composed of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate minerals, and protein, therefore leaving behind a well preserved fossil record.  A great fossil Trilobite specimen for display and study.
