to avoid purchasing a counterfeit of this coin yourself. I actually purchased this coin in May of last year, and I didn't notice it was counterfeit until I took pictures to list it for auction on this site. I took the auction down when I realized it was counterfeit, and
I lost 0 on this coin in the process. There is no need for you to lose money as well.
The best way to determine the coin is counterfeit is to compare the coin to an authentic coin. So I have provided pictures for you to flip back and forth between the authentic and the counterfeit. The obverse is the easiest to diagnose the counterfeit, but the reverse has points to look for as well.
Obverse Diagnostics
Compare the smoke rising form the volcano. The counterfeit does not reach as far towards the lettering.
Compare the mountain ridges on the volcano. The counterfeit lacks detail.
Compare the ground at the woman's feet. The counterfeit has crude details.
Compare the rock on which the anvil sits. The counterfeit is
stippled, while authentic detail matches the ground.
Compare the woman's face. The counterfeit is cartoonish.
There are several other points, such as the way the clothing drapes over the woman's body, but these are the major points.
Reverse Diagnostics
Compare the dentelles. Counterfeit dentelles are squared off, while authentic dentelles are rounded.
Compare the stars on the shield. The counterfeit stars are larger and less sharp.
Compare the lettering. Counterfeit lettering is mushy and less sharp.
Compare the position of the eagle's wings near the lettering. The counterfeit's wing is closer to the A in America.
Once again, there are more points, but noting these should equip you to detect a counterfeit in the future.
Once again, there is no need for you to lose money on a counterfeit, and I have seen many counterfeits listed on this site, but this is the first one that fooled me (the only one that I know of, anyway). Good luck in your searches.
