Description
Name: Diacanthaspis, Taeniaster (2), CryptolithusAge: Upper Ordovician
Formation: Martinsburg Formation
Location: Swatara Gap, Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania
Size: Plate is 2.9 inches across!
This is a one-of-a-kind fossil association from the Ordovician of Pennsylvania. This distinct specimen was found by Steve Hess in 1990 at the now-closed Swatara Gap locality. There is an extremely rare complete Diacanthaspis sp. trilobite on the upper left corner of the plate. Diacanthaspis from this locality are very small, and this one is no exception. There are also TWO examples of Taeniaster spinosus (Brittlestars) and a Cryptolithus bellulus (Trilobite) on the plate. One of the brittlestars is complete, while the other has three of its arms intact. The Cryptolithus cephalon impression has the genal spines preserved, which is quite unusual. The minute detail is excellent on the fossils, and the beautiful orange color is fully natural. All of the fossils are wonderfully showcased on the natural plate of shale. This is a one-of-a-kind association fossil with a very rare Diacanthaspis, Cryptolithus cephalon, and two nice brittlestars from the classic Swatara Gap site.
