Pope John Paul II's visit to the Philippines was originally scheduled in 1980 but due to security reasons, it was re-scheduled to 1981.  Commemorative gold coins like these were already made but were later melted due to the postponement of the schedule. This coin is one the few that escaped the melting pot and now found its way to the coin market.
