When presented together, they signify a lasting friendship, to those friends who are faithful to each other in difficult times. Culturally, Pine, Plum, and Bamboo are significant to winter, because while other plants wither, and become dormant, together they hold their ground and flourish at this time of the season.
Since the Pine withstands the strong cold winds, it's symbolic for endurance, whereas the Bamboo bends with the wind and survives in a contrasting way. Plum blossom, symbolizes perseverance and integrity, due to the early flowering while snow still on the ground, and also longevity because of the evergreen qualities of the Bamboo, and Pine, and because of the Plum blossoms reappearing on their age-old branches.
