THE RAIDERS - Criminals known as "Raiders" organized themselves into gangs and preyed on their fellow prisoners.  Their crimes eventually became so vicious that the prisoners banded together, arrested and hanged the Raider leaders. They were then buried apart from the other Union dead.
ESCAPE TUNNEL - It was a relatively easy matter to tunnel under the stockade.  However, escaped prisoners were almost invariably  run down by dogs and returned.  Escape was also difficult because it was many miles to the Union lines.
